empty tins
sandpaper
acrylic paint and small paintbrushes
glue stick
photographs, origami or art papers, anything you like!
mod podge or sealant

1. Sand the outsides of the tins, making sure to scuff the surfaces so the finish isn’t completely shiny. Using a pencil or pen, trace around the edge where the closed lid meets the tin. Don’t paint or decorate above that line, or the tin will be hard to open!
2. Paint two coats of the acrylic paint of your choice, letting the tins dry for at least an hour or two in between coats. Use a third coat if the paint is uneven.
3. Decoupage a layer of decorative paper or a photo over the painted lid: using a glue stick, apply the paper or design, smoothing it with your fingers. You can apply two layers of papers using the glue stick to affix both papers.
4. Finish with one or two layers of Mod Podge or other sealer, applied with a clean paintbrush; smooth over any air bubbles with your brush. For a cleaner finish, follow the last layer of Mod Podge with a waterproof spray sealant-do this step outside.
