Organizing Tips
|
Getting organized can be easier than you think-here are a few suggestions for streamlining your house and your life. You'll find lots more ideas in my article "Get it Together," on page 26 of the March 2004 issue of BUST!
-
Pace yourself when you're working on a room or a project; follow Flylady's advice and set a timer so you don't end up burned out or overwhelmed.
-
Create a cleaning + organizing notebook in a folder or 3-ring binder. Rip out or print out helpful things from magazines and websites-I like Martha Stewart, Digs Magazine, ReadyMade, + Real Simple. Tuck different-sized papers and clippings into clear plastic sleeves to keep them together.
-
Put like things with like--such as making one shelf in the kitchen for coffee cups, water glasses, and wine glasses (all for drinking out of, obviously), or an area for colanders, measuring cups, and utensils (all cooking accessories). I put all the liquids like cooking oil and vanilla on one lazy susan, and all the dry things like flours and sugars in canisters stacked together.
-
If you use a filing cabinet, organize the folders by what makes sense to you. I have a file folder called "Things that are worth money," which includes frequent flier vouchers, rebates, and coupons, and one for "insurance," like health insurance, car insurance, and that type of thing. Once a file gets huge, split it into 2 or 3 more manageable categories.
-
Recycle or give away what you're not using. Or have a naked lady party and invite your friends to bring over the stuff they're sick of and swap it all out-a super fun way to get rid of everything! Lots of thrift stores and charities are eager to pick up your household goods or clothes, so give them a call to come get what's left.
